At the end of January our staff member Maggy will be heading to the Austrian Alps to undertake the Snow Camp Everest challenge. She will be skiing down 453,000 feet of slope (the length of 3 full marathons, twice the vertical height of Everest) over 2 days.
The aim of which is to raise money for Snow-Camp which is a youth charity established in 2003 to provide disadvantaged young people from inner-city areas with the chance to experience snowsports. As well as offering the opportunity to learn to ski or snowboard, Snow-Camp includes a youth focused Life-skills course designed to enable young people to reflect on the key issues that impact their lives.
Many of these young people who engage with the programme will not have left their estate before let alone see a mountain. The impact Snow Camp has on raising their aspirations and broadening their horizons is invaluable. While they are away Snow-Camp also uses the environment, the activities and the time away from home pressures to enable young people to reflect on their lives and the lives of those around them. An informal and creative Life-Skills course run each day allows young people to consider their potential, value and skills both as individuals and as those who have a responsibility for others.
The course also enables young people to reflect on their experiences of life to date and to focus their sights on what they can achieve in the future – regardless of their potentially difficult home situation. When they get home the support doesn’t stop there, they are mentored and encouraged to get involved in local projects in their community and signposted to work based learning and educational programmes.
You can't put a price on raising aspirations, please offer your support and donate online at Maggy's justgiving site.
