Feedback from Youth Inclusion Day in March

On the 17th March 2010, Streets UTD the World’s largest urban sports resource entered HMP &YOI Ashfield to engage and inspire young people. In partnership with 2nd Chance project and the Positive Voices for Everyone Programme, young people were sign posted into activities both inside and outside of custody with a view of reducing re-offending.

A crew made up of football and basketball freestylers, MC’s and DJ’s engaged over 100 young people throughout the day providing a range of displays and opportunities for young people showcasing their talent and skills. The day was funded by the Positive Voices for everyone programme which in turn received funding from the Youth Justice Board.The Positive Voices for Everyone program is working in partnership with the community in effectively indentify Young People vulnerable to being recruited to Violent Extremism.

Event Outcomes:

106  Young people were engaged by the team throughout the day.

24 Young People were brave enough to stand up in front of the crowd and present some of their newly required skills; Break dancing routines, Football flicks and tricks, basketball free styling, DJ and MC skills, someone even sang on stage.

23  Young people have been signposted into various sport academies offered within Ashfield. Therefore have the opportunity to sign up with 2nd Chance project.

6  Young people received 1-1 mentoring from famous DJ and Streets Utd Director, L Double.     Each young person is now receiving additional information whilst in custody, supporting their transitition back in to the community and in Music, Sport and the Arts.

1 Young person has signed up to a 2nd Chance college programme on his release from custody.
