Big Contract Media Box – Bursary Scheme

2nd Chance Project and Knowle West Media Centre

We have an exciting new funded project that has just been awarded to us by Media Box. Together with our Knowle West Media Centre, we have 10 bursaries on offer for young people to produce issue based media. The project will run from June until the end of October 2010.

Our aim is to create positive change in the lives of young people leaving the criminal justice system and /or those at risk of offending.  We aim to achieve this by promoting the value of young peoples’ life experiences through multi-media platforms, which in turn will raise aspirations, challenge perceptions and give young people the opportunity to become skilled in media production.

We are looking for young people to become a part of our Bursary Steering Group, which will meet every week initially, to steer and coordinate the project. We are also looking for members of the local community and organizations to form an Advisory Group who will meet 3 times over the duration of the project to safeguard the legacy of this initiative and lend their experience and guidance to the Steering group members.

Here is a bit more background on the project:

The bid was written in consultation with young people from Ashfield HMP & YOI and at KWMC. 10 bursaries worth 1K each, will engage at least 30 disadvantaged young people. Some bursaries will be offered to Ashfield HMP & YOI, and the rest to the communities of Knowle West, St Paul's and Easton. The project intends to enable collaboration between young people aged 15-19 in custody and the community. They will produce issue based multi platform media, including radio podcasts, music videos, short animated films, graphics and web assets. The project will open up dialogue through revealing, sharing and understanding of circumstances that some young people find themselves in and the system that is created around them. In addition they will learn project and event management, marketing and exhibition skills by showcasing their own work and other mentoring other young people. They will be supported through the application process, production and distribution of their projects through project facilitators, including Youth Media workers, creative mentors, and two young leaders in mentoring and support roles.
